MISSION STATEMENT:

To bring together a group of enthusiastic young students who are seeking to enhance their leadership abilities.

To provide our campus and community with energetic, large scale, fundraising events that will attract large crowds of people

To use these energies and focus them to benefit various worthy international causes. Specifically, to shed light on regions and causes in the world that are overlooked by most charities, due to their obscurity, the public's ignorance of them, or apathy. Aiding these causes is our primary motivation and ultimate goal.

Never mired in bureaucracy, always open to new ideas however silly or extravagant they may be, it is our goal to set new benchmarks, raise obscene amounts of money for causes we all believe strongly in, and to have an awesome time while doing it.

ASA? What does that stand for? Are there cars in Africa? Do you live in trees or huts? Many have been asked these and other such ridiculous questions. Initial reaction may be to take offense. But, when it is taken into consideration that many of these questions are meant not to offend, but of genuine curiosity, the reaction should be to educate. The African Students Association (ASA) of the Johns Hopkins University comprises a group of students of African and non-African decent dedicated to the education of the Hopkins community at large of the different cultures that comprise the African continent. ASA also provides a network of support for African students at Johns Hopkins. The African Students Association is a service as well as social organization which aims to rid misconceptions concerning Africa through education.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was founded by seven African American educators in 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. These visionaries were in the minority at their predominantly white institution and felt that there was a strong unfilled need for solidarity among African Americans, especially regarding the area of education, which was the cornerstone for the founders' motivation. The sorority spread and dedicated itself to organizing its growing structure for the first three years. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was incorporated in December of 1929. Founding Soror Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little was elected first basileus (presiding officer) of the sorority. Since then, Sigmas have expanded to become an international sorority with exemplary community service agendas and a common goal to uphold sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Our motto is, "Greater Service, Greater Progress."

Peace by Peace is an international organization that works to teach elementary school children the value of non-violent conflict resolution and strategies for deescalation. Three or more students teach classes of around 20 fourth or fifth graders, a prewritten cirriculum structured around educating them about all their options in an argument, and how to approach it from multiple perspectives. Tolerance and heightened communication are the objectives of the cirriculum. Ultimately each volunteer makes a definite, internal, and often unseen change in the children they work with.

The Chinese lion dance blesses people with prosperity while guarding against misfortune and dispelling evil spirits. Often linked to the Chinese New Year, the lion dance may be seen on other occasions such as grand-openings, weddings, birthdays, and festivals.

Traditionally, the person or establishment who hires the lion dance troupe will hang a "chang" (a lettuce with a red envelope containing a donation) somewhere challenging to test the troupe's skill. The lion will pick the chang and spread it around, symbolizing the distribution of good fortune and wealth.

The traditional lion dance is performed by martial arts schools. However, now many troupes are no longer associated with kung fu schools. You will nevertheless recognize traces of various southern style martial arts in lion dance. The stances used, stability required, and power needed to perform an impressive lion dance can only come with tedious martial arts training.

The Johns Hopkins University Bands, founded in 1921, provides an opportunity for Hopkins students to perform instrumental music on the Homewood campus. “The JHU Bands” is the parent name for a few different ensembles, namely the Wind Ensemble, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Flute Choir. The Wind Ensemble plays symphonic and orchestral pieces at formal concerts in Shriver. The Pep Band provides music at all football and lacrosse games. The Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Band perform stage and jazz pieces on numerous occasions throughout the year. The Flute Choir plays chamber pieces for various functions around campus. Though each ensemble has its own personnel, rehearsal and performance times and places, they are organized and run by a joint “JHU Bands” executive board, by policy of the Student Activities Commission (SAC), to provide communication and unity.

The JHU/CSC After School Dance Program is designed to provide a safe alternative for Baltimore City youth to spend time learning the art of dance, gaining experiences and ultimately enriching their lives. The program provides structure as well as an outlet for creativity that children need to grow and develop mentally and emotionally, and incorporates all types of theatrical dance including ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, and cultural dance. In addition to mental and emotional health, physical health is promoted through the athletic nature of dance itself, and through health workshops. Other workshops held throughout the year expose children to other styles and techniques of dance while enabling them to learn about other cultures in order to create a comprehensive base for their dance education. It is our goal to serve the youth of Baltimore through the art of dance, and to ultimately develop a stronger sense of community and awareness between Baltimore and the Johns Hopkins University.

The oldest martial arts club at Johns Hopkins, Hopkins Taekwondo now celebrates its sixteenth year on campus. Following the original interpretation of the art (loosely ITF), Hopkins TKD seeks to enrich its students through understanding of the mental, physical, and philosophical aspects of this Korean martial art. We focus on both the traditional practice of martial arts, and optional competitions for any of our members to take part it, in both forms and sparring.

Our Grandmaster is Tae Sun Kang, who is based in New York City. His website can be seen here: http://www.tkangtkd.com

Classes are free and no prior experience is necessary. Drawing from a myriad of dance styles, the group aims to explore new territory and blur the distinctions between seemingly disparate dance forms.

The Women of Whiting (WoW) graduate women's group was formed in 2005 with the purpose of fostering a sense of community and an environment of support among the graduate women in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins. We meet several times each semester both informally and formally, when we invite female faculty and researchers to address topics which are of interest to women engineers, such as the challenges of breaking into male-dominated fields, planning for a career and family, and the opportunities that science and engineering provide for women.

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art initially developed by African slaves in Brazil during the colonial period. It is marked by deft, tricky movements often played on the ground or completely inverted. It also has a strong acrobatic component in some versions, and is always played with music.

The two main styles of Capoeira are: Angola, which is characterized by slower, lower play with particular attention to the rituals and tradition of Capoeira, and Regional, which is known for its fluid acrobatic play, where technique and strategy are the key points. Both styles are marked by the use of feints and subterfuge, and use groundwork extensively, as well as sweeps, and kicks.

Recently, the art has been popularized by its inclusion in computer games and movies, while Capoeira music has been featured in modern pop music.
